Li & Zapp Advance To Third Round At ITA Regionals In Cary

CARY—Members of the University of North Carolina tennis team opened play at the 2021 ITA Carolina Regional at the Cary Tennis Center on Friday.
Sophomore Logan Zapp and freshman Chris Li both won a pair of singles matches and advanced to Saturday's third round.
Zapp won his opening match over Carlos Berna Ruiz of Coastal Carolina when Ruiz retired with injury after Zapp won the first set, 6-4. Zapp then came from behind in the second round and defeated Duke's Michael Heller 5-7, 6-0, 7-6 (7) to advance. He will face South Carolina's James Story in Saturday's third round.
Meanwhile, Li beat Will Fullett of Wofford in the first round 7-5, 7-6 (8), then came from behind to beat Abhimanyu Vannemreddy of Charlotte 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the second round. Li will face Jake Krug of Duke on Saturday in the third round.
In other action on Friday, Anuj Watane and Mac Kiger each split a pair of matches, winning in the first and losing in the second to drop into the consolation bracket.
Brian Cernoch, Casey Kania, Mark Dillon and Peter Murphy dropped their openers in the first round.
At the conclusion of the singles action on Saturday, doubles action will begin with the first and second rounds.
