Kania & Zapp Advance To ITA Regional Doubles Final

CARY—The University of North Carolina doubles team of Casey Kania and Logan Zapp continued their hot run this weekend and advanced to the final of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Carolina Regional on Monday at the Cary Tennis Center.
Kania and Zapp downed two quality opponents on Monday to reach Monday's final.
In the quarterfinals on Monday morning, they beat Presbyterian's Max Benson and Dusan Milanovic in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. A few hours later, they came from behind to beat Charlotte's Coy Simon and Stefanos Savva, 6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10) in a thrilling match tiebreaker.
A day earlier on Sunday, Kania and Zapp had advanced to the quarterfinals by upsetting the No. 2 seed in the tournament when they beat South Carolina's Toby Samuel and Connor Thomson in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 2-6, (10-8).
The Tar Heel team of seniors Mac Kiger and Brian Cernoch lost its match on Monday to Fons Van Sambeek and Martins Rocens of NC State in a third-set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, (7-10).
Kania and Zapp will face Siddhant Banthia and Jakob Schnaitter of Wake Forest in the championship match on Tuesday in Cary.

Two years ago in this same event in Cary, Carolina's Simon Soendergaard and Mac Kiger came from behind to win a thrilling ITA Carolina Regional doubles championship, beating Furman's Jake Bhangdia and Jake Munns in the final at the Cary Tennis Center.
After losing the first set, 6-7 (4), Soendergaard and Kiger won the second set, 6-4, and the third by a score of 10-7.
The Tar Heel duo ripped off six consecutive wins at the regional, improving to 47-9 in their career as a doubles team at UNC and stepping into the limelight after playing No. 3 singles and going 22-3 during the 2018-19 season.
