Carolina's Third Win in Four Starts This Season
David Ford, Austin Greaser and Peter Fountain finished in the top five and all five Tar Heel starters and two individual entries placed in the top 16 as the University of North Carolina rolled to a nine-stroke win Tuesday at the first-ever Williams Cup presented by STITCH Golf at Eagle Point Golf Club.
UNC hosted the two-day, 54-hole tournament to honor Roy Williams, who retired in April after 18 seasons as the Tar Heels' men's basketball coach, and his wife, Wanda.
Carolina shot 5-under-par 283 today to finish 17-under 847 for the tournament. Georgia also shot 283 today to equal UNC for the best round of the day, and finished second at 8-under 856.
Georgia's Trent Phillips won medalist honors at 15-under 201. He shot 64-69-68, the only player in the field to shoot in the 60s in all three rounds.
With the win, Phillips earns an exemption next June to the Korn Ferry Tour's Rex Hospital Open in Raleigh.
Phillips and Carolina's Ford and Greaser were the only three players to shoot under par in all three rounds.
Ford, a freshman from Peachtree Corners, Ga., finished a collegiate-best second after rounds of 71-67-69 to post 9-under 207. NC State's Maximilian Steinlechner was third at 8 under (72-63-73). Greaser, a junior from Vandalia, Ohio, shot 1 under today and finished fourth at 6-under 210.
UNC sophomore Peter Fountain (72-71-71) tied for fifth at 2 under, fifth-year senior Ryan Gerard tied for 11th after shooting even-par 72s in each round and senior Dougie Ergood tied for 16th at 2 over.
Tar Heels Kenan Poole and Ryan Burnett tied for 11th and 13th place as individual entries. Poole, a junior from Raleigh, shot a career-best 5-under-par 67 today, which was the lowest round of any player in the field. Poole made six birdies and only one bogey on a day that featured blustery conditions and fast greens from the start.
Carolina led NC State by four strokes after Monday's two rounds, but the Wolfpack cut the lead in half after just one hole. Ford (3 under) and Fountain (2 under) helped the Tar Heels make the turn in 7 under par to extend the lead.
At one point early on the back nine Carolina's advantage was 13 strokes over Georgia. The Bulldogs closed to within six after UNC made three bogeys and the 'Dawgs birdied four holes. But Gerard birdied 14, Greaser made birdie at 12 and Ford made a 3 on the par-4 13th to regain an eight-shot margin.
The Williams Cup was UNC's final tournament of the fall season. The Tar Heels finished with three wins and a tie for fourth in four starts.
