CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The holiday season is rife with traditions, and one of the longest running for UNC student-athletes is the Share Your Holidays program.
Each year, UNC student-athletes and staff "adopt" local families through the Share Your Holidays program, which is affiliated with Orange County Social Services. Families provide wish lists and the Tar Heels use those to shop for contributions that help make the holidays brighter.
"It's awesome, especially getting to do this through Carolina and with our teammates," said Cameron Morra, a senior on the women's tennis team. "It's really special, especially during this time of year. We love to do something to give back to the Carolina community and it's just a really great event that we try to participate in every year."
After teams and staffers shopped together and delivered gifts to Loudermilk Center earlier this month, the Carolina gymnastics team and the Student-Athlete Development staff took the haul to Hillsborough for distribution to families.
Tar Heels appreciated being able to collaborate with their teammates and other members of the Carolina community to make an impact locally.
"That was honestly one of the biggest draws for me to come to Carolina to begin with, just that community ... athletes, non-athletes, all of us, we come together and we really do support each other and support the community," said Reza Merchant, a sophomore on the men's fencing team. "It's been an amazing experience so far, and I can't wait to keep growing with this community."
