Tar Heels Celebrate National Girls And Women In Sports Day
February 3, 2021 | General
February 3, 2021, marks the 35th Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day. Every year, this celebration inspires girls and women to play and be active, to realize their full power. This year, with the COVID-19 pandemic, we recognize the importance of staying mentally and physically healthy during challenging times. We invite you to safely celebrate NGWSD in your community and we look forward to celebrating in the future.
But over time, it's evolved into an event to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes, the positive influence of sports participation and the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports. North Carolina has done its part to promote those messages, hosting its own celebration of NGWSD each of the last eight years. Last year's event was held on Jan. 19, with more than 1,000 people congregating at the indoor practice facility to learn from UNC's female student-athletes about their respective sports. During a 90-minute session, members of the women's basketball, cross country, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, track and field, and volleyball teams demonstrated various aspects of their sports at individual stations set up throughout the massive facility. The only Tar Heel women's team unable to participate was tennis, which was competing in Las Vegas.
While this year, we are unable to meet in person, we celebrate the rich history and tradition of women's athletic success at the University of North Carolina.
