Freshman Fountain's 65 Leads Day One
Freshman Peter Fountain shot a 5-under-par 31 on the back nine on his way to an opening-round 65 and sophomore Austin Greaser added a 67 to lead the University of North Carolina to the top of the leaderboard on day one of the 2021 Tar Heel Intercollegiate Saturday at UNC Finley Golf Course.
Â
Afternoon thunderstorms halted play with only four teams having completed their rounds. The Tar Heels shot a 12-under 276, Campbell was 2 under, Arkansas State finished 1 under and UNCW shot 12 over.
Â
Maryland completed 13 holes and was in second place at 3 under.
Â
Fountain is the individual leader after making seven birdies, 11 pars and no bogeys for his 65, his lowest round of the season. It was his sixth round in the 60s in 13 collegiate rounds. He made birdies on the second and seventh holes to turn at 2 under, then birdied 11, 13, 14, 15 and 17 to come home in 31. The 65 is the low round of the season by a Tar Heel.
Â
Greaser was 3 under on the front side and made three birdies and a bogey in a four-hole stretch from 14 to 17 to finish at 67. It was his fourth round in the 60s – and third 67 – in his last six rounds. The Vandalia, Ohio, native is in fourth place.
Â
Austin Hitt and Dougie Ergood both shot even-par 72s and Ryan Gerard had a 73 for the Tar Heels.
Â
Carolina's Ryan Burnett is fifth in the individual standings following a 3-under 69, playing as an individual entry.
Â
Fountain has a one-stroke advantage on Julien Sale of Arkansas State, who also completed his round, and William Koras of Maryland, who is 6 under through only 13 holes. Koras started his round on the 10th hole, shot a 32 on the back nine and is 2 under through four holes on the front side.
Â
Sale, Golfstat's highest nationally-ranked individual in the field at No. 7, eagled the par-5 third and sixth holes, to shoot 30 on the front nine. He shot even-par 36 on the second nine.
Â
The completion of the first round and second of three rounds is scheduled for Sunday, weather permitting.
