CHAPEL HILL - Playing in front of fans for the first time in nearly a year, No. 1 North Carolina won its first outdoor dual match of the season, 7-0, over Miami on a picturesque day from Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
North Carolina, who improved to 12-0 on the season and 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, recorded its 30th straight victory and 40th successive win at home.
Miami (3-4, 1-2 ACC) featured only five players today because of positive COVID-19 tests, quarantining and contact tracing within the program.
The doubles point was secured for the Tar Heels after Alle Sanford and Reilly Tran registered a 6-1 victory on court two.
No. 79 Elizabeth Scotty was first to finish in singles, earning a 6-1, 6-1, victory on court three.
The next three points came in a hurry for the Tar Heels. No. 49 Makenna Jones clinched the victory from court four. Freshman No. 120 Fiona Crawley was next to post on court five and No. 6 Cameron Morra was a 6-3, 6-3, winner on court two.
Jones' win was the 105th of her career, tying Spencer Barnes for 11th in program history.
The last to finish was the featured match of the day on court one between No. 4 Sara Daavettila and Miami's No. 2 Estela Perez-Somarriba, the 2019 NCAA Singles Champion.
In the third head-to-head meeting between the two collegiate standouts, Perez-Somarriba won a marathon first set, 7-6 (5). Daavettila responded with a 6-0 win in the second set and outlasted her opponent in a third-set super breaker by a 13-11 margin.
