Tar Heels' 1v4 Beats Oklahoma
April 17, 2021
Rowing at Clemson (and vs. Oklahoma)
Carolina Rowing returned to competition on April 17 at Lake Hartwell as the Tar Heels raced against host Clemson and Oklahoma.
The Tigers won with 81 points followed by OU (70) and Carolina (65).
UNC's 1v4 highlighted the morning for the Tar Heels, finishing second ahead of the Sooners with a time of 8:09.6, more than 19 seconds ahead of OU. UNC's 1v4 included coxswain Lara King and Taylor Gregitis, Amelia Locklear, Sydney Tumey and Nicole Van Liew.
Carolina's 2v4 defeated Clemson's third and fourth boats with a time of 8:11.0. Carolina's 2v4 crew included coxswain Isabelle McGimsey and Gigi Maroney, Kate Burgess, Hannah Davis and Jessica Judge.
The varsity 8 crew of coxswain Ashley Lim and Ranait Fitzgerald, Katie McMahon, Alessandra De Vito, Natalie Timinskas, Lauren Ferner, Amanda Perez, Alexis Levister and Hannah Fisher came across in third place in 7:08.6.
The 2v8 of coxswain Lauren Walsh and Zoe Rose, Sarah Cate Niles, Neeva Wernsman Young, Olivia Curran, Lindsay Miller, Sarah Velarde, Jackie Wilhelm and Chloe Hyde placed third in 7:37.3
The 3v8 of coxswain Julia Hunt and Claire Melgard, Marion Miler, Lily Brown, Julia Downes, Becca Lewis, Tianna Van Cura, Molly Hilemn and Jules Micchia was the first boat in the water to begin racing this morning and came in second in 7:54.2.
"We took a great step toward our goals today in our journey to ACCs," says co-interim head coach Emilie Gross. "We've got a fleet of boats with some starts and a solid 1k, but you can see the limitations of Covid and practicing primarily on a small body of water as we executed beyond that 1,000-meter mark. We've got a quick turnaround to master more of the course before next weekend. If we bring the energy we are leaving Clemson with today to each and every minute of practice next week, we will make the correct strides."
The Tar Heels return to action on Friday and Saturday, April 23-24, when UNC and Duke co-host the Lake Wheeler Invitational in Raleigh. Racing begins Friday at Noon and Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Due to Covid-19, no fans are permitted to attend this season.
