ACC Rowing Championships Begin Friday
May 12, 2021 | Women's Rowing
Two Days of Racing at Lake Hartwell
Carolina Rowing returns to competition on Friday, May 14, and Saturday, May 15, in the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship hosted by Clemson at Lake Hartwell.
Â
The Tar Heels are racing for the first time since co-hosting the Lake Wheeler Invitational in Raleigh on April 23-24.
Â
The ACC regatta begins at 8:05 a.m. on Friday with the 3V8, followed by the 1V8, 2V8, 1V4 and 2V4. There are two heats of each event.
Â
On Saturday, a petite final will be held prior to the grand final in each event with competition set to begin at 8:05 a.m.
Â
Saturday's race order begins with the 3V8 and is followed by the 2V4, 1V4, 2V8 and 1V8.
Â
Defending ACC champion Virginia is the top seed in all five events.
Â
The Tar Heels are the No. 6 seed in the 3V8, the No. 7 in both varsity fours, No. 8 in the 1V8 and No. 9 in the 2V8.
Â
"Controlled, calm and confident – words we've been working to instill each day at practice since we started the final grind towards the ACC Championship after Lake Wheeler," says co-interim head coach Emilie Gross. "If we can incorporate all three, Carolina Rowing will find ourselves in a place at ACCs we've never been before. Our momentum is gearing up and we look to take a step in the right direction for the new era of Carolina Rowing."
Â
"I have been focused on this weekend since March 2020 when our season was cut short due to Covid," says interim co-head coach Thomas Revelle. "The team has worked incredibly hard to get to this point, and we know we need to go out and execute to the best of our ability on race day. We will try to outperform our seeds in the heats and then see if we can turn some heads in the finals. We have continued to get faster over the course of the season, and our training has been designed to have the athletes peak for this race. We are coming off a much-appreciated taper, and now I expect to see each boat have their fastest 2k's ever this weekend."
Â
The ACC Championship marks the third time this spring the Tar Heels are racing at Lake Hartwell. On March 6 UNC competed against Duke and Clemson and established season-best times in all three varsity eights. UNC also competed against the host Tigers and Oklahoma on April 17.
