Three Advance To NCAA Singles/Doubles Quarterfinals
May 25, 2021 | Women's Tennis
ORLANDO - Top seed Sara Daavettila has reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship, while No. 4 seed Makenna Jones and Elizabeth Scotty advanced to the quarters in the NCAA Doubles Championship on Tuesday from the USTA National Campus.
Daavettila took out No. 21 Jessica Failla of Pepperdine in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The Williamston, Michigan, native is the only player in program history and just the fourth from an Atlantic Coast Conference program to reach the quarterfinals three times in a career.
Daavettila will take on Vanderbilt's 43rd ranked Christina Rosca on Wednesday with the winner moving into the semifinals. In the only previous meeting between the two standouts, Daavettila defeated Rosca back in 2018 in an indoor match in Chapel Hill.
Alexa Graham's collegiate career came to a close at the hands of Miami's Estela Perez-Somarriba, the No. 1 ranked player in the nation and the 2019 NCAA singles champion in a Round of 16 matchup of fifth-year stars from the ACC.
Graham finishes her time in Chapel Hill as a six-time All-America selection, a four-time ACC Champion and a three-time ITA National Team Indoor Champion. Her 144 singles victories are the third most in Tar Heel history.Â
Jones and Scotty dropped the opening set for the second time in as many days, but again rallied to win by virtue of a third-set tiebreaker. Tonight's victim was Furman's 40th ranked tandem of Katarina Kozarov and Julia Adams by scores of 2-6, 7-6 (2), 11-9.
No. 2 seed Daavettila and Cameron Morra were the final match of a busy day and never got out of first gear in falling to the Texas freshmen tandem of No. 19 Kylie Collins and Lulu Sun, 6-0, 6-1.
