Daavettila, Jones/Scotty Reach NCAA Semifinals
May 26, 2021 | Women's Tennis
ORLANDO - North Carolina would not be denied in quarterfinals action at the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles & Doubles Championship on Wednesday. Fifth-year senior Sara Daavettila won in straight sets to reach the semifinals, while Makenna Jones and Elizabeth Scotty cruised into the doubles semifinals as well.
Daavettila, the top seed in the field, dispatched of No. 43 Christina Rosca of Vanderbilt, 6-2, 6-4, in one of four quarterfinal matches that took place Wednesday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.
She becomes just the fifth UNC player to reach the NCAA semifinals, joining an exquisite list that includes Cinda Gurney (1993), Jamie Loeb (2015), Hayley Carter (2016) and Cameron Morra (2019).
Daavettila (22-1) will now turn her attention to third seeded Emma Navarro (23-1) of Virginia. Both players enter Thursday's match with a single loss in 2021, and previously squared off in an abandoned third-set match at the semifinals of the ACC Championship.
Doubles was on the docket in the early evening and the fourth seeded Tar Heel duo knocked out Virginia's 17th ranked tandem of Sofia Munera and Natasha Subhash, 6-3, 6-3.
They are only the fourth doubles team from North Carolina to ever reach the semifinals. The previous three were Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long (2006, 2007), Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay (2016), and Daavettila and Alle Sanford (2018).
Jones and Scotty, now 16-2 this spring, will see another ACC foe in the semis against NC State's No. 12 Alana Smith and Anna Rogers, the first pair to ever reach the NCAA semifinals for the Wolfpack.
