May 3, 2021 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL -Â North Carolina is the top overall seed for the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Team Championship and was awarded as a host school for one of 16 on-campus regional sites. This is the first time in program history that the Tar Heels were selected as the No. 1 seed in the 64-team field.
UNC welcome Arkansas, Old Dominion and South Carolina State to Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Friday, May 7, and Saturday, May 8, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Carolina (26-0) will face South Carolina State (6-4) on Friday at 1 p.m. That match will be proceeded by a first-round meeting between Arkansas (11-10) and Old Dominion (12-4) at 10 a.m. The two first-round winners will meet Saturday at 4 p.m., for the right to advance to the NCAA Super Regional round the following weekend. The remaining four rounds will be played at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
North Carolina earned a national seed in the team championship for the 17th time in 18 seasons under the direction of head coach Brian Kalbas. Carolina is making its 22nd consecutive appearance in the national tournament and 17th in a row under Kalbas. As a reminder, the 2020 NCAA Championship was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Tar Heels have an all-time NCAA record of 48-21 and have advanced beyond the regional round on 15 occasions, including a run to the 2014 NCAA Championship final and the 2019 semifinals the last time the event was held.
Carolina won its fifth-consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Championship title with a 4-1 win over Georgia Tech on Sunday, April 25. The Tar Heels have been ranked No. 1 nationally all season according to the Oracle/ITA rankings and enter the NCAA Championship enjoying a 44-match winning streak, the longest streak in ACC history.Â
The Carolina's men's tennis program earned the No. 6 seed and will also have hosting duties this weekend in Chapel Hill.
