Second Men's Golf All-America in '21
University of North Carolina men's golfer Austin Greaser was named an honorable mention All-America for the 2020-21 season by PING and the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Greaser is the second Tar Heel to earn All-America honors this season. The coaches association named freshman Peter Fountain to its first team in June at the NCAA Championships, where the Tar Heels tied for fifth place, their highest national finish in 28 seasons.
Greaser averaged 71.32 strokes this season, the eighth best in UNC history (his career average of 71.67 is on pace to be the second lowest ever by a Tar Heel).
"This is a great honor for Austin," says head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "His game continues to improve for many reasons but mostly because of his commitment to his craft. He has a tremendous work ethic, is willing to learn and he loves the game and competition."
The Vandalia, Ohio, native previously earned All-ACC, All-East Region and Academic All-ACC honors. He was second on the team in stroke average, rounds under par (13 of 28), rounds in the 60s (10), score to par (+7), birdies (91) and record (538-163-34).
He finished in the top 10 in five of nine tournaments, including a tie for fifth at the 2021 ACC Championship, when he helped Carolina win the stroke play portion of the tournament in record-setting fashion. He was one of two Tar Heels (with fifth-year senior Austin Hitt) to shoot in the 60s in all three rounds of stroke play in the ACC Championship. Only one other Tar Heel had ever accomplished that.
Greaser defeated Florida State's John Pak, the No. 1-ranked player in the country and the eventual winner of the Haskins Trophy as the National Player of the Year, in match play in the ACC semifinals. Greaser also tied for 10th at the NCAA Noblesville Regional and rallied to earn a tie in his NCAA quarterfinal match against Arizona State.
This is the second straight season UNC had two All-Americas in men's golf. Golfweek named Ryan Burnett (second team) and Ryan Gerard (honorable mention) in 2019-20.
