Greaser's 62 Sets Course Record to Win U.S. Am Qualifier
July 14, 2021 | Men's Golf
Nine Birdies, No Bogeys in Record Round
Austin Greaser, a rising junior at the University of North Carolina, set the course record and shot a career-best 62 to win a United States Amateur qualifier Wednesday at the Edgewood Country Club in Charleston, W. Va.
Â
Greaser shot a 6-under-par 65 in Wednesday's morning round, then blistered the field with nine birdies, nine pars and no bogeys in the afternoon to shoot 62.
Â
He won the 36-hole U.S. Amateur qualifier with a 15-under 127, six shots ahead of runner-up Christopher Zhang.
Â
Greaser's 62 broke the previous 18-hole course record, which was 64 by head professional Craig Berner. Greaser's previous low round was a 64 in his first collegiate tournament in September 2019 at the Kaluhyat Course at Turning Stone Resort, Verona, N.Y.
Â
He made seven birdies, an eagle, a bogey and a double bogey en route to his opening-round 65, then birdied 1-5-8-9-12-14-15-16-18 in the afternoon to establish the course record 62.
Â
Greaser, who earned All-ACC, All-East Region and honorable mention All-America honors at UNC in 2021, is the third Tar Heel to qualify for the 2021 U.S. Amateur. Peter Fountain automatically qualified by virtue of being ranked No. 36 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and Ryan Gerard won his qualifier last week in Hobe Sound, Fla.
Â
The U.S. Amateur will be contested at historic Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa., and Longue Vue Club in Verona, Pa., August 9-15.
