Ford a Perfect 4-0-0 in AJGA Wyndham Cup
University of North Carolina men's golfers Ryan Gerard won a U.S. Amateur Qualifier, Dougie Ergood finished second in the New Jersey Amateur and David Ford went 4-0 in matches at the AJGA Wyndham Cup that concluded today.

Gerard shot a 5-under-par 67 to win medalist honors at the U.S. Amateur Qualifier in Hobe Sound, Fla., to secure an automatic berth in the upcoming 2021 U.S. Amateur.

Gerard, a rising fifth-year senior, earned one of two spots in the Amateur in the 55-player field at the Hobe Sound Country Club.
The Raleigh native rebounded from a quadruple bogey 8 Thursday on the second hole of the 36-hole tournament. He went out in 38 on the first nine yesterday, then shot 3-under 33 on the inward nine to close with a 71. Today, Gerard bogeyed the fourth hole to drop to even par, then made four birdies and an eagle over the final 14 holes to finish the tournament at 6-under 138, two shots ahead of Nashawn Tyson, who also earned a spot in the U.S. Amateur.

The Hobe Sound tournament is one of approximately 100 qualifiers across the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Gerard is the second Tar Heel to qualify to date for the U.S. Amateur. Rising sophomore Peter Fountain of Raleigh earned an invitation based on his top 50 spot in the World Amateur Rankings.

The U.S. Amateur will be contested at historic Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa., and Longue Vue Club in Verona, Pa., August 9-15.

Ergood, a rising senior from Mount Laurel, N.J., shot a 3-under 67 Friday in the final round of the New Jersey Amateur to finish second, three shots behind the winner, Michael Brown. It was Ergood's second 67 in the four-round tournament. He shot 73-67-70-67 for a 3-under 277 at the Essex Fells Country Club in Essex Fells, N.J.

Ford, an incoming freshman from Peachtree Corners, Ga., was the only male player to win all four of his matches in the annual AJGA Wyndham Cup, which features the top 40 male and female junior players in the country in an East-West format.

Ford, the No. 1 ranked junior golfer in the country, won his four-ball match with Caleb Surratt on Wednesday, July 7, 1 up; teamed with his brother, Maxwell, to win the afternoon foursome, 1 up, Wednesday; won the mixed foursome with Amanda Sambach, 2 up, on Thursday; and defeated J. Holland Humphries of Austin, Texas, in singles 3 & 1 on Friday.

Ford was 1 down through seven holes in singles, but won three straight holes to pull ahead by two and secured the victory with consecutive wins on the final two holes to take the match 3 & 1. Ford's 4-0-0 record helped the East win the overall competition, 29.5-20.5.
