August 13, 2021 | Men's Golf
Makes 9 Birdies, 2 Bogeys in 31 Holes Friday at Oakmont
Austin Greaser, a rising junior on the University of North Carolina men's golf team, won two matches Friday to advance to the semifinals of the 2021 United States Amateur at historic Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club.
Â
Greaser, who qualified No. 24 after two rounds of stroke play earlier in the week, defeated Clemson's Jacob Bridgeman 6&4 in the morning Round of 16 and Georgia Tech's Ross Steelman 2&1 in the afternoon quarterfinal.
Â
The Vandalia, Ohio, native will play No. 4 seed Travis Vick of Texas in the semifinals on Saturday.  Stark is the highest-remaining seed in the 312-player field. He defeated Brian Stark of Oklahoma 1 up in the quarterfinals.
Â
The 36-hole championship match is Sunday.
Â
Greaser played flawlessly in the Round of 16 win, winning six of the 14 holes that were played without losing a hole. The match was all square through the first five holes before Greaser won six of the next nine, the first three with pars and the 10th, 13th and 14th holes with birdies.
He made 11 pars, three birdies and no bogeys to defeat Bridgeman, who like Greaser, earned All-ACC honors last season.
Â
Greaser went out fast in the afternoon quarterfinal, winning the first two holes with birdies and leading 3 up after three holes.
Â
The honorable mention All-America made his first bogey of the day in losing the sixth hole, but added birdies to win the seventh and 12th holes. Steelman birdied the ninth, 10th and 13th holes to pull within a hole, but Greaser extended his lead to two with a par on 16 and closed out the match when he and Steelman both made birdies at 17.
Â
In total, Greaser played 31 holes on Friday and made 20 pars, nine birdies and only two bogeys.
