Men's Golf No. 1 in Golfweek Rankings
September 28, 2021 | Men's Golf
Tar Heels Have Won Twice in Two Starts This Season
The University of North Carolina men's golf team is No. 1 in the nation in the current (9/27) Golfweek rankings.
The Tar Heels have won both their tournaments this season. UNC won the Rod Myers Invitational by three strokes over NC State at Duke University Golf Club and the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational by three shots over Arizona State at the Olympia Fields North Course.
UNC returns to competition October 4-6 at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational presented by Tyson Foods at the Blessings Golf Club in Johnson, Ark.
The Blessings Invitational features men's and women's teams from 10 schools, including UNC. The Golf Channel will provide live coverage all three days from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Eastern.
Carolina is joined in the top 10 in Golfweek's national rankings by Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, Arizona State, Clemson, BYU, Oklahoma State, NC State, Texas and Arkansas.
"The vision we had four years ago certainly included Carolina being in the top spot of college golf," says head coach Andrew DiBitetto, whose Tar Heel teams have won nine tournaments in the last five years. "We've all worked very hard to reach our goals, especially our student-athletes. It's nice to see all that work pay off, but everyone in our program knows the end goal isn't to be ranked No. 1 in the country in September or October. We have our eyes locked in on being the last team standing on June 1st."
Four Tar Heel players are ranked in Golfweek's top 100, including fifth-year senior Ryan Gerard, who is No. 3, junior Austin Greaser (22), freshman David Ford (36) and sophomore Peter Fountain (76).
Gerard and Greaser both won their first collegiate individual titles this season. Gerard shot 15-under 201 to win at Duke, while Greaser shot 4-under 206 at Olympia Fields.
Gerard made birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to win by two; Greaser holed out from the fairway on the final hole to also win by a pair.
