CHAPEL HILL–The University of North Carolina men's tennis program will return to its customary slate of individual tournaments and competitions this Fall, the Tar Heels announced on Monday with the release of their 2021-22 Fall schedule.
After the Covid-19 pandemic eliminated the Fall season in 2020, Tar Heel players are scheduled to take part in a more customary set of events in 2021.
UNC players could appear in an assortment of the top individual tournaments this Fall, including the Duke Invite, the Fayetteville ITF Futures, the Elon Invitational, the ITA Men's All-American Championships, the Commodore Invitational, the ITA Regionals in Cary, N.C., the Tallahassee ITF Futures and the Wake Forest Fall Invite.
Head coach Sam Paul is entering his 29th season at the helm of the Carolina program, and the Tar Heels are in the midst of one of the top runs of sustained success in team history.
UNC went 21-4 and finished sixth nationally in 2020-21, advancing to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship match and the NCAA Tournament Round of 16. The Tar Heels won the 2021 ITA Indoor National Team Championship, the second in program history, and saw William Blumberg become the first 10-time All-America in Intercollegiate Tennis Association history.
A year earlier in 2019-20, Carolina went 12-1 and were ranked No. 2 nationally when the Covid-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the season. And the year before that, UNC advanced to the NCAA Tournament semifinals for the second time in three years.
