Swimming & Diving Drops Dual Meet At Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 24th-ranked North Carolina women's swimming and diving team fell to No. 1 Virginia, 168-126, while the unranked Tar Heels men's team lost 171-124 to the 18th-ranked Cavaliers at the Aquatic and Fitness Center Friday afternoon.
UNC's women dropped to 2-3 in dual meet competition, while the men lost their fourth straight to fall to 1-4 on the season.
The Tar Heels recorded 29 medal finishes with nine first-place finishes.
Senior Grace Countie claimed two individual medal finishes, winning the 100-yard backstroke (52.35), and capturing second in the 100-yard freestyle (49.01). She finished two seconds ahead of teammate Greer Pattison to win the 100 back and was just 0.42 seconds behind Virginia's Alexandra Walsh in the 100 free.
Sophie Lindner touched the wall more than two seconds ahead of a pair of Cavalier swimmers to win the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.11). It was her third victory in the event this season after winning the race in dual meets with Queens and Georgia Tech.
Ellie VanNote also earned a pair of top 3 finishes, placing third in the 100 (54:45) and 200 (2:00.71)-yard butterfly.
Olivia Nel finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (23.01), while Mia Duus placed third in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:38.75) as did Addison Smith in the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.88).
Counite, Lindner and Nel teamed with Heidi Lowe to win the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:30.69).
Aranza Vazquez finished first on the one and three-meter springboard with teammate Paige Burrell claiming second place in each event.
On the men's side, Patrick Hussey claimed the Tar Heels' lone win of the meet as he reached the wall 0.24 seconds in front of Virginia's Peter Thompson in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:24.03).
Boyd Poelke and Aidan Crisci each had a pair of top 3 finishes with Poelke placing second in the 100 (48.47) and 200 (1:48.62)-yard butterfly and Crisci taking third in the 500 (4:33.88) and 1000 (9:29.750-yard freestyle.
Tomas Sungaila tied for second place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:38.05) while Valdas Abaliksta (100 breast/54.93), Tucker Burhans (100 back/49.02) and Dylan Citta (200 breast/2:04.31) each earned a bronze medal spot on the podium.
Anton Down-Jenkins swept the diving events with Alex Hart and Campbell Worsley finishing second and third in both the one and three-meter springboard competitions.
North Carolina returns to action Friday, Jan. 28, at Duke. The meet is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start in Durham.
