January 26, 2022 | Cross Country, Academics
Four Tar Heels have been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic team for men's cross country, announced Wednesday by the league. Patrick Anderson, Will Coogan, Ethan Strand and Parker Wolfe were selected for the team, which considers both academic and athletic performance during the 2021 season.
Â
Anderson, from Pittsburgh, Pa., is majoring in biology. In his second season of competition for the Tar Heels, he was 26th at ACC Championships and earned All-Southeast Region honors after placing 21st at that meet.
Â
Coogan, from Exeter, N.H., is also a biology major. In 2021, his second season of competition, he was the recipient of the men's cross country 2021 Elite 90 Award, which goes to the competitor at the NCAA Championship with the highest GPA.
Â
Strand, from Vestavia, Ala., has not yet declared a major. In his first season of collegiate competition, he placed 35th at ACC Championships, fourth on the UNC team, and 31st  at NCAA Regionals.
Â
Wolfe, from Denver, Colo., is majoring in exercise and sport science. In his first season of collegiate competition, he was the 2021 ACC Freshman of the Year and earned All-America honors after finishing 28th in the NCAA Championship field.
Â
FSU's Adriaan Wildschutt was named the ACC Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Â
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0-grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Â
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0-grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
