Shippee's School Record Highlights Day 1 At Indiana
January 28, 2022 | Track & Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –North Carolina's Jill Shippee broke the school record in the women's weight throw Friday as the Tar Heel track and field teams competed at the Indiana Relays, hosted by the Hoosiers at Gladstein Fieldhouse. Shippee's throw of 71-4.25 surpassed Laura Gerraughty's record throw of 70-3.75 in 2005.
While Shippee's was the most dramatic rewrite, it was one of numerous record book updates based on Tar Heel performances on Friday.
In the women's 5K, Ava Dobson took first in 16:22.59, the third-fastest time in school history. Natalie Tyner's third-place time of 16:26.25 ranks fourth in school history. Kelsey Harrington placed fourth on the day in 16:28.93, which is the sixth-fastest time by a Tar Heel.
The men's 5K was much the same, with a Tar Heel in first and lots of record-book edits. Patrick Anderson won the race in 14:00.87, the second-fastest time in school history. He led five Tar Heels in the top seven of the race and all ranked among the top 10 all-time at UNC. Marshall Williamson placed second in 14:01.17, third in school history. Colton Sands was fourth in 14:03.79, seventh in school history. Jack Aho was fifth in 14:07.59, which ranks ninth in school history. And John Tatter ran a 14:09.88, seventh in the race and 10th in the record book.
Anna Keefer won the women's long jump with a season-best distance of 20-6.25.
UNC also won the women's DMR in a time of 11:04.59, fifth in school history and the fastest by a Tar Heel squad since 2009. Carlee Hansen, Alyssa Hernandez, Makayla Paige and Taryn Parks represented Carolina in the race.
