Women's Golf Wins Ivy, Junkkari Co-Medalist
October 10, 2022 | Women's Golf
First Team Title In Five Seasons
University of North Carolina senior Krista Junkkari birdied two of the final three holes to claim a share of the individual title and lead the Tar Heels to the team championship at the Ivy Intercollegiate Monday on the lower course at the Baltusrol Golf Club.
Carolina's team title is its first under second-year head coach Aimee Neff and the program's first since the Briar Creek Invitational in 2017-18.
"We beat some really good teams on a great USGA, LPGA level course," says Neff. "We continued to play steady golf, not our best, but a win always feel good. They are hard to come by. I am excited to see us continue to work the process and improve but I am incredibly proud of them. They are hungry for more."
Junkkari, a native of Elimäki, Finland, shot 72-69 for a 3-under 141 total. She tied Lottie Woad of Florida State, who also shot 72-69. This is Junkkari's first collegiate victory. Her previous best was a second-place finish at the 2021 Cougar Classic.
The Tar Heels have won at least a share of medalist honors in two straight tournaments. UNC senior Kayla Smith won the Texas A&M "Mo"Morial in September.
"We couldn't be happier for Krista to come away with a win," says Neff. "Based on her work ethic and character she certainly deserves it. She had a great finish at Texas A&M and has been knocking on the door to get a win. She just has continued to work at getting better each day and it shows with this result."
UNC shot 294-295 for a 589 total, five strokes ahead of 17th-ranked Florida State. Princeton was third (596), Notre Dame was fourth (600) and Miami was fifth (601).
The Tar Heels' 294 total in the first round gave UNC an eight-shot lead over Princeton and Notre Dame. UNC's 295 afternoon score was third best of the round behind FSU (287) and Princeton (294).
Smith tied for eighth at 1-over 145, freshman Vilde Nystrøm tied for 17th at 7-over 151, freshman Megan Streicher tied for 40th and Riley Quartermain tied for 45th.
Day two of the Ivy Intercollegiate Tuesday will feature match play between the 30 players from the ACC squaring off against 30 players from the Ivy League. Pairings will be based on individual finishes in Monday's stroke play.
