Wrestling Drops Dual To Michigan At Doubles On The Diamond

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 15 North Carolina wrestling team hosted No. 5 Michigan for a first-ever dual in Boshamer Stadium, with the mat placed over home plate for a unique experience, before falling to the Wolverines 23-12 on Sunday afternoon.

The special event, Doubles on the Diamond, was the first time that a wrestling match had been held at Boshamer Stadium, home of Carolina Baseball. The dual boasted a crowd of 1,139 cheering on the Tar Heels in a top-20 match up against the Wolverines.

Carolina boasted wins in four matches, with victories in 125, 165, 174 and 197, respectively.

Starting at 141 on Sunday at 3 p.m., the Heels fought with close decisions in many of the matches. Joey Mazzara came out on top in 165 over Cole Mattin in a 7-3 decision, then Clay Lautt came out victorious in a 4-1 decision over Max Maynor.

Max Shaw showed up in a tight 3-2 decision over Jayden Bullock at 197, and in the penultimate match of the night, Jack Wagner defeated Jack Medley in a close bout with a 4-3 decision.

Carolina wrestling returns to action on Saturday at the Life U Open, before their next dual of the season versus the Buckeyes of Ohio State at home in Carmichael Arena on Sunday, Nov. 20.
