Women Ranked No. 14 in Pre-Season USFCA Poll
November 2, 2022 | Fencing
CHAPEL HILL - The North Carolina women's fencing team is ranked No. 14 in the pre-season US Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) poll of the season. The Tar Heels join Notre Dame (No. 2) and Duke (No. 10) as the three ACC teams ranked in the top 15.
"The rankings show where coaches feel like teams are at this time of year," said Head Coach Matt Jednak. "Our goal is to make sure we are in a place where we have the maximum number of qualifiers we can to put our team in a place to be successful at the NCAA Championships."
The rankings reflect the strength of the Mid-Atlantic/South region. Carolina joins five other teams from the Mid-Atlantic/South region in the top 15. The quality of this region will push the Tar Heels to be at their best if they want a shot at qualifying for the NCAA Championships in March.
"This is where everybody feels like we stand," said Jednak, " I think it's more important that we are in the conversation at the end of the season."
The 14th ranked Tar Heels will have an opportunity to prove themselves against other ranked opponents this weekend at the Western Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo.. The women's fencing team will face off against No. 3 Columbia, No. 4 Harvard, No. 5 Ohio State and No. 9 Northwestern.
