Three Titles Up For Grabs At ITA Fall Nationals
November 5, 2022 | Women's Tennis
SAN DIEGO - The North Carolina women's tennis team continued its domination on Saturday of the 2022 ITA Fall National Championships from Barnes Tennis Center. Fiona Crawley and Anika Yarlagadda both advanced to the finals in the Main and Consolation Singles Draws, respectively, while Crawley and Carson Tanguilig will play for the doubles championship.
Crawley is one victory away from becoming the first woman since Ohio State's Francesca Di Lorenzo in 2016 to win both ITA fall majors. Crawley won the ITA All-American Championships last month in October, and will look to join UNC legend Jamie Loeb as the only Tar Heels to win both in the same season. Loeb turned the trick back in 2013 during her brilliant freshman season.Â
On Saturday, Crawley quickly dispatched of No. 16 Carol Lee of Georgia Tech, 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals and will now take on No. 3 Daria Frayman of Princeton in Sunday's Main Draw title match at 1 p.m. ET.
Yarlagadda's outstanding fall campaign continued on Saturday with a 6-0, 6-3, win over No. 59 Marlee Zein of Texas. She will face Duke's top player Chloe Beck in the consolation singles championship match, also at 1 p.m. ET
No. 2 seed Crawley and Tanguilig took out No. 26 Elaine Chervinsky and Natasha Subhash of Virginia, 6-1, 6-2. They will turn their attention to top seed Savannah Broadus and Kari Miller of Pepperdine in Sunday's final at 3 p.m. ET
The Tar Heel trio are now one win from adding their names to an impressive list of previous Tar Heel winners of this event. Jamie Loeb was the first to capture the singles championship back in 2013 and was later joined in consecutive seasons by Sara Daavettila in 2019 and Alexa Graham in 2020.Â
Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay won the doubles event in 2015 and last fall Crawley and Elizabeth Scotty brought the trophy back to Chapel Hill in 2021.Â
