Clay Lautt Leads Strong Season Debut For Wrestlers At Southeast Open

SALEM, VA.— Clay Lautt took second place at 174 pounds on Saturday as wrestlers from the University of North Carolina began the 2022-23 season with a strong performance at the Southeast Open at the Cregger Center on the Roanoke College campus.

Tar Heels reached at least the semifinals in eight of 10 weight classes in the Open Division.

Three UNC grapplers took third place in their respective weight classes. Gavin Kane finished third at 184 pounds with a 6-3 decision over Neil Antrassian of Virginia in the third-place match. Max Shaw was third at 197 after an 18-6 major decision win over Franklin & Marshall's John Crawford. And Brandon Whitman took third at 285 pounds with a win by fall in just 21 seconds over Jacob Sartorio of Appalachian State.

Wrestlers from UNC, Virginia Tech, Appalachian State, Bluefield State, Campbell, Columbia, Davidson, Franklin & Marshall, Liberty Christian Academy, Newberry, Norfolk Academy, Roanoke College, The Citadel, Tiffin, Virginia, VMI and West Virginia took part in the large and impressive field of competitors.

The Tar Heels will return to action on Friday November 11 (Veteran's Day) against Campbell in the Battle at Bragg at Fort Bragg, N.C. Two days later, Carolina will host its home opener against Michigan on Sunday November 13 at Boshamer Stadium on the UNC campus, home of the Tar Heel baseball team.
