Men's Golf 8th After 1st Round In Hawai'i

Ford and Fountain 2 Under
Freshman David Ford (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) and sophomore Peter Fountain (Raleigh) shot 2-under-par 70s and North Carolina stands tied for eighth place in a 19-team field after round one of the Amer Ari Invitational Thursday at the Hapuna Golf Course in Waimea, Hawai'i.
 
The Tar Heels shot 6-under 282 today. Defending champion Arizona State is the leader after 18 holes at 20-under 268. Texas Tech, Washington and Oklahoma State are tied for second five strokes back and Georgia Tech is fifth at 274.
 
Ford made six birdies, while Fountain made five on their way to shooting opening-round 70s and are tied for 32nd place in the individual standings, which ASU's Mason Andersen and James Leow share the lead with 7-under 65s.
 
Carolina's Ryan Burnett (Lafayette, Calif.) and Ryan Gerard (Raleigh) both shot 1-under-par 71s, Austin Greaser (Vandalia, Ohio) had a 77 and Ryan Smith (Carlsbad, Calif.) was 1 over playing as an individual entry.
 
The second of three rounds is Friday. The Amer Ari Invitational is the first event of the spring for the Tar Heels.
