
Men's Golf Moves Up to 6th Behind Ford's 64

Burnett Shoots 29 on the Front 9
David Ford shot a 64, one off the University of North Carolina freshman record, and Ryan Burnett (67) and Austin Greaser (69) also shot in the 60s to lift the second-ranked Tar Heels to a 17-under-par round on day two of the Amer Ari Invitational Friday at the Hapuna Golf Course at Waimea, Hawai'i.

Carolina shot 271 today, the third-best team score of the day, four strokes behind 36-hole tournament leader Texas Tech and one more than defending NCAA champion Pepperdine. The Tar Heels moved two spots up the leader board to sixth in the 19-team field with the final round to play on Saturday.

The Red Raiders lead at 36-under 540, one stroke ahead of defending event champion Arizona State (-35). Washington is third (-30), Pepperdine is fourth (-28), Oklahoma State is fifth (-28) and the Tar Heels are sixth at 23 under.

UNC was 11 shots better today than in Thursday's first round.

Ford (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) made nine birdies and only one bogey is shooting 8-under 64, three strokes better than his previous low college round. He began his day with a bogey on the 12th hole, finished the back side with a trio of birdies and shot a 6-under 30 on the front side. The 64 equals the third-best round in UNC history by a freshman.

Burnett, a senior from Lafayette, Calif., shot his best round of the season today, which included a 7-under-par 29 on the front nine. He finished with eight birdies, a bogey and a double for a 5-under 67.

Greaser uncharacteristically began the tourney on Thursday with a 77, but rebounded today with four birdies and a lone bogey for a 3-under 69.

Peter Fountain also was under par with a 71 and Ryan Gerard shot 74.

Ford is tied for third at 10 under, three shots off the lead. Texas Tech's Baard Skogen (66-65) has the 36-hole lead at 13-under 131. Arizona State's Preston Summerhays is second at 11-under 133. Ford is one of five players at 10 under.
