50 Years: 50 Champions of Carolina Women's Athletics
February 7, 2022 | Athletics
Over the past 50 years, Carolina Athletics has built a tradition of women's sports excellence. Since seven Tar Heel women's teams went varsity as part of the Department of Physical Education in 1971-72 (they moved to the Department of Athletics three years later), the now-15-team women's program has earned 39 team national championships and recorded 40 individual national champions, 50 national players of the year and 133 conference championships.
As a part of our year-long celebration of 50 Years of Women's Sports at UNC, Carolina Athletics and The Rams Club have chosen 50 Champions of Carolina Women's Athletics, a compilation of outstanding Tar Heel student-athletes, coaches, staff members and donors who have been, and continue to be, champions, legends and leaders.
Representatives from Carolina Athletics, The Rams Club and the University joined for multiple meetings to nominate, discuss and ultimately choose the final 50 Champions from across all UNC sports and units, honoring all eras and decades of the storied program.
The criteria: Tar Heel student-athletes, coaches, staff members and donors who have made an impact – and have championed women at Carolina and beyond – as part of a team, unit, and/or in the community. For the purposes of the selection process, a 'Champion' of women's athletics was considered for more than impressive performances in competition.
Selection was a difficult and fulfilling assignment for the committee, considering the thousands of Tar Heels who have gone on to lead and give back in so many ways. The final list Includes at least one member from each of the 15 women's programs at Carolina, including a diverse group of women and men who have championed women, women's sports and their progress.
Beginning today, Feb. 7, through April, each of our 50 Champions will be honored with a vignette detailing their many contributions to Carolina which will be featured on GoHeels.com/50Champions. The group also will be honored at an event in April in conjunction with The Rams Club.
Carolina Athletics and The Rams Club are proud to celebrate 50 Years of Carolina Women's Athletics as well as the continuing efforts of FORevHER Tar Heels to champion women student-athletes at Carolina.
