Gerard, Greaser Named to Hogan Award Watch List
February 8, 2022 | Men's Golf
The University of North Carolina's Ryan Gerard and Austin Greaser are two of 30 players named to the watch list for the 2022 Ben Hogan Award presented by PNC Bank. The Hogan Trophy Award Foundation, the Friends of Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America announced the 30-player list today.
Â
The Ben Hogan Award awards the top men's NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer based on all collegiate, amateur and professional events over the previous 12 months. Three of the top four players in the Official World Golf Ranking—No. 1 Jon Rahm (2015, 2016), No. 3 Viktor Hovland (2019) and No. 4 Patrick Cantlay (2012)—are past recipients of the honor, while No. 2 Collin Morikawa (2018, 2019) was a two-time finalist.
Â
Carolina is one of seven schools with multiple players on the watch list. UNC joins Arizona State, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M and Wake Forest with two players, while Oklahoma State has three.
Â
Gerard, a fifth-year senior, from Raleigh, N.C., leads Carolina in stroke average this season at 69.87, which is on pace to be the second-lowest single-season average in UNC history. He is ranked 12th in the country (Golfweek). He won the Rod Myers Invitational at Duke in September, tied for sixth at The Blessings Collegiate Invitational and seventh at Olympia Fields.
Â
Greaser, a junior from Vandalia, Ohio, is ranked No. 23 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. He won the Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational last September, holing out on the 54th hole for the win, was fourth at The Williams Cup and tied for ninth at The Blessings. Greaser is averaging 70.33 strokes per round, leads UNC with 12 rounds under par and nine in the 60s. He was a finalist in the 2021 United States Amateur and will be competing in the 2022 Masters and U.S. Open.
Â
Greaser and Gerard rank first and third, respectively, in UNC career stroke average. Greaser has shot 71.37 in 67 rounds; Gerard 71.80 in 137.
Â
This year's list of 10 Hogan Award semifinalists, which could include individuals not on the watch list, will be named April 15. That group will be pared down to three finalists on May 5. The finalists will attend a black-tie dinner on May 23 at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, where the winner will be crowned.
Â
The Ben Hogan Award's selection committee is comprised of 32 leaders in collegiate, amateur and professional golf.
Â
Since 2002, the Hogan Trophy Award Foundation has awarded over $825,000 in scholarships to more than 30 universities. For more information on the Ben Hogan Award presented by PNC Bank, visit TheBenHoganAward.org and follow @BenHoganAward on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
