Men's Tennis Sweeps Wofford & NCCU

CHAPEL HILL—The University of North Carolina men's tennis team picked up a pair of non-conference wins on Wednesday, blanking Wofford and North Carolina Central by 7-0 scores in each match of a doubleheader at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
With the two wins, Carolina improved to 4-1 this season. Wofford fell to 0-7 and NCCU dropped to 0-5.
The Tar Heels won a hard-fought doubles point to take a 1-0 lead against the Terriers to start the afternoon. Logan Zapp and Casey Kania cruised to a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, only to see Wofford take the match at No. 3 over Benjamin Sigouin and Peter Murphy. Brian Cernoch and Mac Kiger grabbed a 6-4 win at No. 1 to seal the point and the 1-0 lead.
Kiger gave Carolina a 2-0 advantage with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, followed by a 6-0, 6-3 win by Lieberman at No. 4 for a 3-0 lead. Anuj Watane won the clincher, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6 singles. Cernoch picked up a hard-fought win at No. 2 in a third-set tiebreaker, and Zapp won in straight sets at No. 5 after winning a first-set tiebreaker, 10-8.
The final score was 7-0 in favor of the Tar Heels.
In the nightcap against NC Central, UNC switched up its doubles lineups as Murphy and Cernoch won, 6-2, at No. 2 and Lieberman and Sigiouin also won, 6-2, at No. 3 doubles.
Carolina cruised to straight-set wins in all six singles matches, including wins by Cernoch (No. 1), Sigouin (No. 2), Zapp (No. 3), Lieberman (No. 4), Watane (No. 5) and Murphy (No. 6).
The Tar Heels will host South Carolina on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
