Smith's 71 Leads Women's Golf In Clover Cup Rd 1

University of North Carolina junior Kayla Smith shot a 1-under-par 71 Friday in round one of the Clover Cup hosted by Notre Dame at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.
Smith led the Tar Heels to a 4-over 292, good for seventh place in a 17-team field. Carolina is eight shots back of TCU, which posted a 4-under 284 over the opening 18 holes.
Nicole Adam shot even-par 72 and Krista Junkkari was over 1 over with a 73.
Smith was two over par after three holes but played error-free over the final 15 holes with three birdies and a dozen pars to finish the round tied for 12th at 1 under.
Adam led UNC with seven birdies, but had five bogeys and a double to tie for 17th.
LSU's Ingrid Lundblad is the 18-hole individual leader with a 7-under 65.
Round two is Saturday.
