Countie Has Record Breaking Night At NCAAs

ATLANTA – North Carolina senior Grace Countie was part of two record breaking performances on Friday night at the 2022 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships.
Individually, she set the school record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.77 on her way to a sixth-place finish in the championship finals.
Later in the evening she swam the anchor leg for the Tar Heels' 400-yard medley relay team that establish a new school standard in the event. Sophie Lindner, Lilly Higgs, and Ellie VanNote teamed with Countie to finish the race in a time of 3:30.31.
Lindner and VanNote also competed in the consolation finals of their respective individual events. Lindner finished sixth in the 100-yard backstroke consolations finals, while VanNote placed eighth in the consolation finals of the 400 IM.
Sophomore diver Aranza Vazquez finished atop the standings in the consolation finals of the 3-meter springboard competition.
The Tar Heels are tied for 11th through 14 events at the national championship meet with 85 points. Virginia leads the field with 386.5 points followed by Stanford in second place with 276 points and Texas in third with 257 points.
The championship meet concludes Saturday, March 19, with the final six events. Lindner and Greer Pattison will represent the Tar Heels in the 200-yard backstroke, Countie will compete in the 100-yard freestyle, VanNote in the 200-yard butterfly and Vazquez on the platform.
