Adam Ties for 27th to Lead Women's Golf at Rucker Intercollegiate
March 2, 2022 | Women's Golf
Sophomore Shoots Final-Round 73 for Best Finish of the Season
Nicole Adam and Krista Junkkari led the Tar Heels with 73s in the third and final round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate Tuesday at the Long Cove Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Â
Carolina tied for 14th in the 17-team event, which Wake Forest won with a winning score of 9-over-par 861. South Carolina was second nine shots behind the Demon Deacons, with Arizona State third and Baylor and Texas tied for fourth. The Tar Heels finished the 54-hole tournament at 44-over 896 (302-297-297).
Â
"This was another opportunity to compete against one of the strongest fields in the country," says Carolina head coach Aimee Neff. "It was chance to compete against the best teams, which continues to motivate us. These are the teams we want to be competing against. For us to improve, we must get some measuring sticks to see where we are right now and find all the ways we can continue to get better."
Â
Adam, a sophomore from Pinehurst, N.C., (72-75-73) led UNC with a tie for 24th place at 7-over 220. Kayla Smith tied for 33rd at 8 over (72-74-75) and Junkkari was 46th at 11 over (79-72-73).
Â
"We are thankful we were part of the first regular-season televised tournament for women's golf," says Neff. Â "We have a short turnaround before we head to Arizona for the Clover Cup. Our players learned a lot of good lessons this week, things we can apply and work on before we compete again. We want to continue to get one day better each day we play and practice. We have a couple more events before we get to the ACC Championships in April, when we want to be playing at our best."
Â
Wake Forest's Carolina Lopez-Chacarra was the medalist by two strokes shooting 4-under 209.
Â
The Tar Heels return to competition March 11-13 at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz., in a tournament hosted by Notre Dame.
