April 23, 2022 | Men's Tennis
ROME, GA.—The University of North Carolina men's tennis continued its hot run on Saturday, beating Georgia Tech, 4-1, to advance to the championship match of the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship at the Rome Tennis Center.
The Tar Heels have won eight of their last nine matches, including three in a row.
Carolina is an ACC finalist for the second consecutive year and will face Virginia in the championship match for the second year in a row. Last year in Rome, UVA beat UNC, 4-3, in the finals.
On Saturday, UNC quickly claimed the doubles point following wins from eighth-ranked Brian Cernoch and Mac Kiger at No. 1 and Casey Kania and Logan Zapp at No. 2.
In singles play, Georgia Tech tied the match following Andres Martin's victory over Cernoch at No. 1, but the Tar Heels won three straight to clinch the match with victories from Peter Murphy (No. 6), Kiger (No. 3) and Anuj Watane (No. 5). Watane won the clincher, 6-2 and 6-4 over Brandon McKinney at No. 5.
