Junkkari Wins, Women's Golf 2nd At NC State Match Play

Tar Heels Fall 4-1 to South Carolina
University of North Carolina junior Krista Junkkari won her match but South Carolina won the other four to defeat the Tar Heels, 4-1, in the championship of the NC State Match Play Monday at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh.
Junkkari won three of the first four holes against Paula Kirner and led by multiple holes throughout the match, upping the lead to four with a win on the 14th and closing out the match 3&2 with a half on the 16th hole.
Junkkari went 3-0-0 in her matches, including a pair of wins Sunday that helped the Tar Heels defeat both Duke and NC State, 4-1.
Mathilde Claisse defeated Natalia Aseguinolaza, 4&2; Tai Anudit beat Kayla Smith, 4&3; Louise Rydqvist beat Crista Izuzquiza, 3&2; and Justine Fournand defeated Nicole Adam, 6&5.
"I'm really proud of our players for being in contention to win a championship today," says Tar Heel head coach Aimee Neff. "Hats off to KJ (Krista Junkkari) for winning all three of her matches, but we know we can play better in a lot of areas than we did today. Congratulations to South Carolina; they're a great program that showed where we want to be and that's what we continue to work toward. This was a new position for us and we learned a lot these two days about competing at such a high level and that's good. I'm thankful for this exposure and the experience that will help us the next time we are in a similar position."
Carolina returns to competition April 14 at the ACC Championship in Pawleys Island, S.C.
