Top-10 Basketball Finishes Lead UNC To 7th In Directors' Cup Standings
April 7, 2022 | General
A pair of top-10 NCAA Tournament finishes by the Carolina men's and women's basketball teams, including a national championship game appearance by the men, have led the Tar Heels to seventh place in the country in the current LEARFIELD Directors' Cup standings.
The Directors' Cup is a multi-sport competition that awards points based on NCAA postseason success. Each school may accumulate points towards the Cup standings in 19 sports – four of which must be baseball, men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball.
Carolina amassed 361.00 points in the winter season, which to date includes championship results in 11 sports, eight of which UNC sponsors (all but women's ice hockey, rifle and skiing).
Combined with the 295.50 points the Tar Heels totaled in the fall, UNC has 656.50 Directors' Cup points, second most among ACC programs. UNC is one of three ACC schools in the top 10.
Michigan has the current lead at 761.00 points. The Wolverines are followed by Notre Dame, Ohio State, Stanford, Texas, Wisconsin, UNC, NC State, Kentucky and Arkansas.
The Tar Heel men's basketball team earned 90 points for advancing to the national title game against Kansas. Carolina entered the tournament as a No. 8 seed but eliminated the defending national champion and top-seed Baylor in the second round, won the East Regional and knocked out West Regional champion Duke in the Final Four in UNC's first-ever NCAA Tournament game against the Blue Devils.
The women's basketball team earned a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16 defeating No. 4 Arizona, 63-45, in Tucson on the defending NCAA runner-up's home floor. The Tar Heels battled No. 1 South Carolina in the regional semifinal, falling by eight points to the eventual national champions (the eight-point margin was the closest game the Gamecocks played in the Tournament).
Two other Tar Heel programs finished in the top 20 in their respective championships with women's swimming and diving adding 61.5 points for 14th place and wrestling contributing 56.0 points for an 18th-place performance.
Men's and women's fencing finished 26th (22.0 points), men's swimming and diving was 27th (47.0 points) and women's indoor track and field placed 51st (20.5 points).
Carolina finished fourth in the 2020-21 Directors' Cup, its 22nd top-10 finish in the 27-year history of the multi-sport competition. It was the 19th time UNC had the highest national finish among Atlantic Coast Conference schools.
