CHAMPAIGN, Illinois - Three North Carolina women's tennis players earned first-round victories on Monday at the 2022 Division I NCAA Singles Championship from the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex at the University of Illinois.
No. 51 Carson Tanguilig had the most impressive win of the three by knocking out No. 4 seed Daria Frayman from Princeton, 6-4, 6-4. It was a nice bounce back for the UNC rookie who lost for the first time all year at five singles on Saturday in the team portion of the NCAA Championships.
Tanguilig improved to 31-6 in her outstanding freshman campaign with the win over Frayman, who became the first Ivy League women's tennis player to ever earn the nation's No. 1 ranking in March.Â
Carolina had five entries into the 64-player field and first up on Monday was No. 55 Fiona Crawley, the nation's leader in singles victories. The San Antonio, Texas, product made quick work of No. 62 Emmanouela Antonaki of Mississippi State, 6-3, 6-4.
Crawley's 44th win of the season places her alongside Betsy Heidenberger (1981-82) for the fourth most in a single season for the Tar Heels.Â
No. 30 Elizabeth Scotty was equally dominant against No. 38 Julia Adams from Furman by earning a 6-2, 6-2, victory.Â
No. 5 seed Cameron Morra was upset in her first-round match against No. 69 Veronika Miroshnichenko of Loyola Marymount. She won the opening set, but dropped the final two sets to bring her Carolina singles  career to a close.
No. 35 Reilly Tran also had her season come to an end with a three-set loss to No. 43 Mariia Kozyreva from St. Mary's. The sophomore from Fairfax, Virginia, managed an impressive 27-7 record this season.
Second round action continues on Tuesday, while doubles gets underway featuring the No. 2 team of Crawley and Scotty, and Morra and Tanguilig, who were added as alternates into the 32-team field.Â
