June 15, 2022 | Men's Golf
Three current and former Tar Heel men's golfers are set to compete in the 2022 U.S. Open, which begins Thursday (June 16) at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., which last hosted the national championship in 1988.
Ryan Gerard, who just completed his fifth and final season as a Tar Heel, made the U.S. Open field by winning co-medalist honors last week at a qualifier in Jupiter, Fla. He shot 5 under par over 36 holes in his first professional tournament. The Raleigh native earned second-team All-America honors and was named All-ACC after leading UNC to a tie for fifth place in the 2022 NCAA Championship.
Rising senior Austin Greaser reached the finals of the 2021 U.S. Amateur, which was held last August at Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh. The Vandalia, Ohio, native is a two-time All-ACC and honorable mention All-America.
Former Tar Heel Sean Jacklin tied Gerard for medalist honors at the Jupiter qualifier. Jacklin played one season Carolia in 2010-11 before turning professional on the PGA Latinoamerica Tour. The Scotland native played eight tournaments for the Tar Heels and was UNC's No. 3 finisher in the 2011 ACC Tournament.
Greaser and Gerard will begin their U.S. Opens on the 10th tee, while Jacklin will start on the first hole.
Greaser is the first to play with a 1:36 p.m. tee time on Thursday. He is paired with Luke List and Corey Conners.
Gerard and Jacklin both begin at 2:42, the final tee time of round one. Gerard is paired with Brady Calkins and Jesse Mueller.
