Greaser, Gerard Fare Well In U.S. Open First Round

The University of North Carolina's Austin Greaser shot 2-over-par 72 and Ryan Gerard shot a 74 in the first round of the 2022 U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.

Greaser birdied his second and third holes (he and Gerard both began their opening rounds on the 10th hole) and played the first nine bogey-free. The Vandalia, Ohio, native, a rising senior at UNC, was shot 4-over 39 on the second nine to finish 2 over. Greaser is tied for 57th place in the 156-player field and is tied for third among the 15 amateurs playing in the Open.

Gerard was 4 over on his first nine holes, then made pars on every hole on his second nine. The Raleigh native is tied for 102nd. Gerard just completed his fifth season at UNC and is playing in his second professional tournament; his first was when he qualified for the national championship.

Sean Jacklin, who played one season at UNC in 2010-11, was 8 over.

All three players teed off in the afternoon when scoring was higher. Greaser tees off Friday in the second round on the first hole at 7:51 a.m.
