Makes Four Birdies In Final Six Holes
David Ford, a rising sophomore at the University of North Carolina, shot a 6-under-par 65 in the fourth and final round to win the Southern Amateur by three strokes Saturday at the Sea Island Golf Club's Plantation Course in St. Simons Island, Ga.
Ford came from three shots off the 54-hole lead to win the title at 20-under 264. He defeated Jiri Zuska and Mason Willams, who held the overnight lead.
Ford shot 67-62-70-65 for the victory. His second-round 9-under 62 (which included a double bogey) matched his lowest career competitive round.
The Peachtree Corner's Ga., native came into the tournament No. 18 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. He shot 1-under 34 on the front nine in the final round, then made five birdies without a bogey to shoot 31 on the inward nine to secure the title. A birdie on the 18th hole was the fourth in his final six holes.
