January 26, 2023 | Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina men's and women's tennis teams are both hosting regionals in the ITA Kickoff Weekend this Friday-Sunday from the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center indoor courts. The UNC women are the three-time defending champions of the event, and the Tar Heel men won it in 2016 and 2021.
The men's bracket features 13th-ranked Harvard, 17th-ranked North Carolina, 21st-ranked Columbia and Oklahoma State, while the women's side features No. 2 UNC, Utah, Charlotte and Maryland.
The action begins Friday with a pair of women's matches - Carolina vs. Maryland at 1 p.m. followed by Utah vs. Charlotte at 4 p.m. The two winning teams will square off in the championship match on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The consolation match is slated for Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
On the men's side, Columbia and Harvard are the first of four Saturday matches at 10 a.m. with Carolina and Oklahoma State scheduled for 1 p.m. The consolation match will take place on Sunday at 11 a.m. and the championship match will be at 2 p.m.
The winner of the title matches advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The men's indoor championship is Feb. 17-20 in Chicago, Ill. The Tar Heels knocked off Baylor, 4-1, in 2021 to win their second indoor title in program history. UNC became just the second school and the first since Stanford in 2000 to win both the men's and women's championships in the same year.
