October 30, 2023 | Cross Country
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNC junior cross country runner Parker Wolfe was named the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) Men's National Athlete of the Week, the organization announced Monday, after Wolfe captured the ACC men's individual championship on Friday.
Wolfe, a native of Denver, Colo., became the first Tar Heel student-athlete to win the award during the cross country season.
Wolfe galloped to top individual honors at Apalachee Regional Park, covering the 8k tract in 23:03.1. He, eventual runner-up Paul O'Donnell of Syracuse and David Mullarkey of Florida State were all within 0.4 seconds of each other at the 7k split before Wolfe pulled away over the final 1k to win by five seconds. Wolfe finished as the runner-up in 2022.
Behind Wolfe, the Tar Heels put three other athletes in the top-10 and knocked off No. 4 Syracuse, and three other top-30 programs, for the team title. It was UNC's first ACC Cross Country Championship since 1985.
The Tar Heels will return to competition on Nov. 10 at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships in Spartanburg, S.C.
