November 14, 2023 | Men's Golf
University of North Carolina juniors David Ford and Maxwell Ford are playing this week in the PGA TOUR's RSM Classic at the Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course in St. Simons Island, Ga.
David earned his spot in the field, his second PGA TOUR start, by winning the Jones Cup, a premier amateur tournament in January 2023. He birdied the 18th hole in the final round at the Ocean Forest Golf Club to shoot 12-under 204 to win the Jones Cup. David previously shot a second-round 62 at the Sea Island Golf Club's Plantation Course to win the 2022 Southern Amateur.
Maxwell will be making his PGA TOUR debut on a sponsor's exemption. The 72-hole RSM Classic begins on Thursday, November 16.
The Fords are two of five current or former Tar Heels competing in the RSM Classic. Hall of Famer and RSM tournament host Davis Love III (1982-85), Ben Griffin (2014-18) and Ryan Gerard (2017-22) are also in the field.
Love will be paired with both Fords in the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday. The Tar Heel trio begins the first round at 8:55 a.m. on the 10th hole on the Plantation Course.
The Ford brothers, who hail from Peachtree Corners, Ga., finished the fall college schedule ranked one-two in scoring average for the No. 1-ranked Tar Heels.
Maxwell averaged 69.64 over 11 rounds in five starts, which included three team tournament wins for UNC at Olympia Fields, the Williams Cup and East Lake Cup. He finished second in the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational at 8 under par, tied for second in stroke play and went 1-0-1 in match play in the East Lake Cup and tied for ninth in stroke play and won his match in the St Andrews Links Collegiate.
David averaged 69.67 over nine rounds in four tournaments for UNC this fall. He won the Williams Cup on the first hole of a playoff, tied for second in stroke play and decisively won both his matches in the East Lake Cup and tied for fifth in the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational.
David also helped Team USA win both the Walker Cup at the Old Course in St Andrews in September and the World Amateur Team Championship in Abu Dhabi, UAE, in October. He made the Walker Cup-clinching putt in his singles match and matched the best round of the tournament with a final-round 64 in the WATC, where he finished tied for fifth in the individual standings.
David was a first-team All-America and the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year in 2023. He finished fifth in the 2022 NCAA Championship and T22 in 2023. He is the UNC career leader in scoring average (70.16) and cumulative score to par (85 under par in 83 rounds).
He made his PGA TOUR debut at the 2023 Barbasol Championship, where he made the cut by two shots and finished T58 at 7-under 281 (71-67-71-72). David is also scheduled to play in the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational in March by virtue of a player vote at the 2023 Palmer Cup.
Maxwell tied for 18th in the 2023 NCAA Championship. He played two seasons at the University of Georgia, where he posted four top-five finishes.
