November 21, 2023 | Cross Country
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – University of North Carolina junior Parker Wolfe was named Southeast Region Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season, and Chris Miltenberg was honored as Coach of the Year as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its Regional Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the 2023 NCAA Division I Cross Country season on Tuesday.
A vote of USTFCCCA-member coaches determined award winners. Only those individuals from USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for awards.
Wolfe, who hails from Denver, Colorado, finished ninth at the 2023 NCAA DI Cross Country Championships. He entered the national championship meet, having won the individual title at the ACC Championships and finishing runner-up at the Southeast Region Championships.
Wolfe became UNC's first individual ACC men's cross country champion since 1985, winning the conference title race by more than five seconds. He has finished second at the regional championships in each of the last two seasons.
In his fifth year as head coach at North Carolina, Miltenberg led the Tar Heels to a sixth-place finish at the 2023 NCAA DI Cross Country Championships, their best finish since 1985 and second straight top 10 after placing 10th a year ago.
Under his tutelage, Carolina captured its first ACC Championship since 1985 and its second-straight regional title.
Miltenberg, named regional coach of the year twice at Stanford, becomes the first Tar Heel to receive the men's coach of the year award. Former UNC coach Mike Whittlesey was named Southeast Regional Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2003.
