Four Tar Heel Wrestlers Competing Internationally This Weekend

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Four North Carolina wrestlers are set to compete on the international level this weekend, as part of the qualification process for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games.Â
The duo of Tyler Eischens (77 KG) and Marisol Nugent (62 KG) will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, for the 2023 United States Senior Nationals. The top-five finishers at each weight class will qualify for the 2024 Olympic Team Trials, held on the campus of Penn State in April.Â
The 2023 Canadian Wrestling Championship winner Lachlan McNeil is set to compete at the Canadian Team Trials, held in Edmonton, Alberta. The winning wrestler at each of the six freestyle weight classes will earn a spot to represent Canada next summer in Paris. The top-ranked Canadian wrestler at 65 KG entering the event, McNeil is set to compete for his home country for the first time since the 2023 Pan American Games in August.Â
Rounding out the representation this weekend, Sonny Santiago (74 KG) will travel south to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the Puerto Rico Senior National Championships. The action Saturday will serve as a qualifier to represent Puerto Rico at the 2024 Pan America Championship and Olympic Qualifier, held in Acapulco, Mexico.Â
As a team, Carolina will return to Carmichael Arena this weekend, hosting Morgan State at 5 PM on Saturday, closing out the weekend on Sunday at Appalachian State.Â
