CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – For the fourth straight year University of North Carolina student-athletes established a school-record for multi-year graduation rates, and also set the mark for the highest single-year rate as reported in the NCAA's annual Graduation Success Rates.
Tar Heels student-athlete GSRs for the incoming classes of 2013-14 through 2016-17 were a record 92%. The single-year rate was also a record 94%.
The NCAA's Graduation Success Rates measure graduation rates over a six-year period, factoring student-athletes who were on scholarship their first year and graduate from their respective university or leave the program via transfer to another university or professional opportunities while in good academic standing.
The data released today includes the 2013-14 through 2016-17 incoming classes.
Eleven of Carolina's teams have multi-year GSRs of 100 percent including women's basketball, men's and women's fencing, men's golf, gymnastics, women's lacrosse, women's soccer, men's and women's swimming and diving, women's tennis and volleyball.
Another 11 sports have GSRs of at least 90 percent, including men's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, rowing, men's soccer, softball and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field.
The gymnastics team continued its perfect streak of reaching 100 percent for the 19th time in the 19-year history of the NCAA's GSR.
Other notable streaks of 100 percent multi-year GSRs include women's swimming and diving (15 straight years), women's fencing (14 consecutive), volleyball (13 straight), women's lacrosse (seven in a row), women's tennis (five straight and 14 overall) and women's basketball and men's golf (four consecutive).
The field hockey program, which has won five of the last six NCAA championships, was 93%, its 19th straight year of 91 or better. Men's basketball hit 90% for the fourth year in a row, and football's was its highest since 2009.
Twenty of Carolina's teams met or exceeded the national average for their respective sports.
