Tar Heels Defeat Pepperdine in ITA Round of 16

Seattle, Wash. - No. 2 Carolina earned a 4-2 victory over Pepperdine in the First Round of the 2023 ITA Division I National Women's Team Indoor Championships at the Seattle Tennis Club.
The Heels got things going early, claiming the doubles point behind the paring of Abby Forbes/Reilly Tran who cliched the 1-0 lead for the Heels 7-6 (7-3) in the tiebreak. Carolina got started early with Reese Brantmeier/Elizabeth Scotty taking a 6-2 win over Janice Tjen/Savannah Broadus. The Wave took court 2 with Zaar/Thamchaiwat defeating No. 1 Crawley/Tanguilig 7-6 (6-8).
No. 18 Anika Yarlagadda got things going in singles, defeating Carolyn Campana of Pepperdine 6-2, 6-0 giving the Tar Heels the 2-0 lead in the match.
The Wave got on the board, with No. 16 Savannah Broadus defeating No. 12 Abby Forbes 7-5, 6-3 and No. 44 Lisa Zaar def. No. 9 Carson Tanguilig 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 making it a 2-2 contest.
No. 62 Elizabeth Scotty def. Bunyawi Thamchaiwat 7-5, 6-4 to give the Tar Heels the 3-2 lead in the match. Then freshman and No. 122 Reese Brantmeier def. No. 20 Janice Tjen 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 to clinch the match for the Tar Heels giving then the 4-2 victory.
The Tar Heels advance to the Quarterfinals on Saturday, Feb. 11 where Carolina will face Michigan at the Seattle Tennis Club at approximately 9:30 p.m. ET (6:30 p.m. PT). The Wolverines knocked off Virginia 4-2 during the Friday night match.
