Greaser's Opening 64 Leads Men's Golf To Top Spot In Las Vegas

Austin Greaser made seven birdies and an eagle and finished his round with an 8-under-par 64 to earn a share of the individual lead and help the University of North Carolina take a seven-shot advantage after 18 holes Sunday at the Southern Highlands Collegiate in Las Vegas.

The fourth-ranked Tar Heels shot 17-under 271, their second-best round of the season. They lead 14^th-ranked Pepperdine by seven shots. No. 16 Texas and No. 11 Florida are tied for third at 5 under and No. 7 Illinois is fifth at 3 under.

All five Tar Heels shot par or better in the opening round. Greaser shot 64, which tied his second-best collegiate round, Dylan Menante shot 4-under 68, David Ford had a 69, Ryan Burnett shot 70 and Peter Fountain posted an even-par 72.

Greaser began his round with an eagle 3 on the par-5, 620-yard third hole. He birdied four, five, six and eight to make the turn with a 6-under-par 30. The Vandalia, Ohio, native birdied 13 to go 7 under before making his only bogey of the day on the 14^th hole. He finished his round with birdies on 17 and 18 to shoot 64.

Greaser is tied with Florida's Yuxin Lin and Pepperdine's Sam Choi at 8 under.

In other competition this weekend, UNC senior Kenan Poole shot 73-71 to finished tied for fourth place at even-par 144 in the NC State Wolfpack Invitational at the Lonnie Poole Golf Club in Raleigh.
