GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC junior Aranza Vazquez Montano has been named ACC Women's Diver of the Year and Yaidel Gamboa has been named Women's Diving Coach of the Year, the league announced Monday.
This marks the second ACC Diver of the Year award for Vazquez Montano, who also earned the award as a freshman in 2020-21, while it's the first award for Gamboa as head diving coach. Vazquez Montano is one of only two divers in UNC women's diving history, along with Elissa Dawson in 2016, to receive the yearly award.
Vazquez Montano capped the 2022-23 season by capturing first place on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard at the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, becoming the first diver in program history to win a national championship.
At the ACC Championships, she became the first diver to capture first place on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard as well as the platform since 2008 and was named ACC Diver of the Meet for her accomplishments as she was in 2021.
Gamboa garnered ACC Women's Diving Coach of the Year honors following Vazquez's historic year. He was also named the CSCAA Division I Women's Diving Coach of the Year following a season where he tutored five NCAA Championship qualifiers along with a dual national champion.
